Dr. Komi Agoda-Koussema

My name is Dr. Komi Agoda-Koussema, a proud American and immigrant running for Congress to represent Congressional District 11. I am originally from Togo and Ghana in West Africa where I have families in both countries. My late father served in the Ghanaian Army for 30 years. My mother currently lives with me and my family on Staten Island.

I am also a proud Old Saint from St. John’s school, Sekondi Ghana where I completed my high school education in June of 1977 at the G.C.E O’ levels. I went on to attend Universite’ du Benin in Lome, Togo and I completed in 1986 with a master’s degree in English Linguistics. I speak both French and English and several African languages fluently.

My Personal Journey

I immigrated to the United States in 1985. After completing my college education at the University of Lomé, Togo, I went to teach secondary school in Gabon, in Central Africa, between 1986 and 1988. This was the beginning of my career as an educator. In 1988, I returned to the United States for the third summer to continue work for the Staten Island YMCA as a day camp counselor in recreation and cultural affairs.

Career as a Mentor & Educator

Because of the success I had in Gabon in September 1989, I joined the New York City Department of Education as a teacher of French. Fast forward today, I have taught in several high schools in the city, from the Bronx, Brooklyn, and now Staten Island. I have taught in Curtis High School from February 2000 to the present.

Besides being a full-time high-school educator, I have also taught and trained prospective teachers in the TESOL Department in the graduate school of education as an adjunct professor in Touro College in New York City, where I have served as a mentor for ESL teachers. I have mentored and coached these young men and women who are currently teaching in classrooms across New York City and the world. I am also an active member of Christ Assembly Lutheran Church on Staten Island. Even though I was born and raised catholic, today, I consider myself a husband, father, grandfather, born-again, conservative, family-values-oriented Democrat.

Personal Life & Family Background

Having adopted Staten Island as a home away from home, I have lived my entire adult life on the North Shore in Graniteville. I am a husband, married to my wife Anio, with whom we have raised six daughters and one son who is currently attending Binghamton University in upstate New York. All my children have been products of the public schools' system in NYC. Among my children are three adopted special needs girls whom we fostered and adopted, the youngest of whom is 23.

I am also a grandfather of 10 children, four boys, and six girls so, we are a very close-knit family. All the grandkids are blessed to enjoy the company of their great-grandmother, who spends time with them as needed from time to time. I am fortunate to have been married to my wife, business partner, and soul/sole mate for more than 20 years.

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without her love and support because she has been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional achievements. Thanks to her hard work and sacrifices, I have been able to acquire two additional master’s degrees and a doctorate in education.

Dear friends and neighbors:

My name is Dr. Agoda, and I’m running for Congress to represent Congressional District 11 of Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn.

I have been an educator for 33 years, teaching in several high schools and at Touro College, where I mentor students in the graduate school of education.

I’m running because status quo representation has failed the working class people, communities of color, and immigrants who make this district and this city run. After three decades serving our communities as an educator and mentor, I have ideas to help improve the lives of our people, especially the working families who are squeezed from all angles and struggling to make ends meet. In Washington, I’ll work to implement common sense solutions to help advance and move our constituency forward, from our schools, to our small businesses, to our environment.

The primary issues of my campaign are based on a Seven Point Pledge:

  • To secure and protect affordable healthcare for all.
  • To grow and develop our economy while protectingworking families, who always carry the burden of our economy on their shoulders.
  • To secure more educational and enrichment resources for all K-12 schools, including expanding programs and resources for our special-needs population..
  • To promote the development and growth of small and mid sized businesses, especially given the effects of the ongoing health and economic crisis.
  • To reform and strengthen our law enforcement systems so that they provide adequate safety and protection for our families.
  • To improve the infrastructure on Staten Island including building a new public hospital, more affordable housing, and much-needed bridges, tunnels and roads to reduce traffic congestion.
  • To protect voting rights by making the voting process more simple and accessible for all eligible voters. .

As an educator, I have concrete plans for how to improve our schools and develop a sustainable economy. The college track is not for everyone, and we must expand job training and apprenticeships available to all young people have opportunities to develop their interests. To support our small business economy, we must expand loan affordability and provide supports for business owners to navigate application processes. We must also create new incentives to encourage the development of new businesses. By providing much-needed support and reform to our schools and businesses, we’ll bolster the working families on whom the backbone of our economy rests.

I’m running for Congress because I love serving my community. As your representative, I’ll be a 24/7 resource for our people, and I’ll work to empower each and every voice. Together, we’ll rebound from the present health and economic crisis stronger than ever.

Our Platform

Today, I am honored and humbled to have the privilege to announce my candidacy to run for Congress to represent the 11th Congressional District which includes all of Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn.

About Agoda 4 Congress

Today is the dawn of a new political era. Our democracy is badly damaged after years of division. The health of our economy and our people is struggling to rebound from the Covid-19 crisis. Washington needs new leaders who understand the working people of our country and have bold solutions to build a stronger American society for the 21st century.

As your representative, I will serve the 11th Congressional District with a focus on transparency and serving all constituents irrespective of their backgrounds.

I will be a 24/7 community servant, fighting for the resources and reforms that our people desperately need and solving the problems they send me to Washington to solve.

The primary issues of my campaign are based on a Seven Point Pledge:

  • To secure and protect affordable healthcare for all.
  • To grow and develop our economy while protecting working families, who always carry the burden of our economy on their shoulders.
